Opening Night: Inspired Her Exhibition at LeGrange Gallery
Last Saturday, August 23rd the walls of LeGrange Gallery came alive with the voices, visions, and power of 26 female artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives. The Inspired Her exhibition at the World Trade Centre included talks and speeches, celebrating creativity, strength, and the collective impact of women in art.
Inspired Her holds deep meaning for me. It brought together women I admire, like Sheryl Leigh, Director of LeGrange Gallery and Creative Asia Arts Centre, and Angela Liu, Managing Director of the World Trade Centre, powerful, benevolent women whose guidance and support made the evening possible.
Among the artists featured, Elen Jury stood out with work that excites me for the directions her art will take and the cultural contributions she will continue to make. Connie Wong, who has just completed her Master of Contemporary Art, exemplifies the richness that comes from decades of life experience before formally studying and exhibiting art.
I am inspired by the strength that emerges when women’s hearts and minds unite. When women support women, voices rise beyond silence and expand beyond words. Stories of mothers, daughters, and granddaughters are revealed through their work, legacies of strength that are fierce and gentle, breaking the silence historically imposed on female perspectives.
It’s always fascinated me in an upsetting way, the notion that historically and culturally, it’s been embedded in the collective psyche that women shouldn’t to take up space. A woman has every right to take up the space she needs, not because she is a woman, but because she is human. When we celebrate differences and support each other, the possibilities for growth, creativity, and collaboration are endless.
