The Art of Surface
May 15th, marked the opening of The Art of Surface—an exhibition presented as part of Melbourne Design Week, held at Romulus Folio Gallery within The Gladstone.
The exhibition is the outcome of a residency that asked for deep attention: to surface, to silence, and to the subtle tensions that hold structure in place. These works explore the threshold between containment and release—what becomes visible when we stay with the surface long enough for something deeper to emerge.
Much of my creative practice begins in the unknown. I rarely start with a clear meaning in mind. What I understand about the work often arrives after it’s made. The art reveals what language can’t always hold. The Art of Surface traces this process—how texture, repetition, and interruption become a kind of language in themselves.
I’m grateful to Marcus Westbury and FB Ideas for supporting this residency, and to The Gladstone for providing a space—both physical and conceptual—where this work could unfold.
Special thanks also to Samuel Galloway for his thoughtful collaboration and steady presence throughout the development of the project.
To those who visit: thank you for spending time with the work. I hope it invites reflection, a slowing down, or even a shift in how surface is experienced—not as something that hides, but as something that holds.
